The Mets have now lost six in a row with no relief in sight. Unlike the Yankees, their bats cannot make up for dreadful pitching. Pinning hope on Matz and Lugo is thin gruel, since Matz seems chronically injured and Lugo was just a pleasant surprise last year. To make up eight games on the Nats (despite Washington’s bullpen woes) is a tall order. Yet it is still too early to throw in the towel and bring up Smith and Rosario. And also unlike the Yanks last year, they don’t have desirable trade options. They could get very little for Granderson, Duda, Walker, etc. They are just going to have to slog through it and hope they get help from somewhere, anywhere. I’m not seeing it on the near horizon.
