A third of the way through the season, it’s time to admit that the Mets are going nowhere and should look to the future. With a host of free agents departing next season, they should actively explore doing what the Yankees did last year. The problem is —who do they have of any real value to trade?
Reyes and Granderson won’t get much. Bruce and Cabrera likewise. Addison Reed may have some value, but trading him destroys what’s left of the pen.
Maybe it’s time to go with Rosario, who’s tearing the cover off the ball in Vegas. Let him play shortstop, have Reyes and Flores play third and use Cabrera as a utility guy.
The sunk cost theory should be in play. Even though certain players are making big bucks, that’s no reason to let them continue to struggle, with vague hopes they’ll pull out of it.
