Apologies to Tom Petty, but that’s the state of New York baseball.
Regardless of what happens tonight, the Mets are toast. Time to plan for 2018.
Start with a serious reevaluation of the training staff. TJ Rivera with a leg problem. Dehydration? Pro athletes don’t understand how to stay hydrated in hot weather? And with the latest scare to Cespedes, the fear is that this 27.5 million dollar a year player will be plagued by stints on the DL with pulls and tweaks for his whole career. And who is supervising their most expensive asset? Barwis has failed so far in his training regimen.
The Yanks have much more hope, but even that is beginning to fade. This will be a great test of Cashman’s acumen — to make the team better now without compromising the future. As bad as the first base situation has been, pitching is the primary need. Granted: the offense is not as good as the Astros, but it is good enough to get them to the postseason if the pitching improves. Boston is starting to edge away from them in the East. The All Star break will be a busy time for quiet conversations which could lead to necessary moves.
