The Yankees and Red Sox played a 16 inning game yesterday. Scoring runs was like pulling teeth. So by midnight tonight, they will have played at least 34 innings in the last thirty two hours. Then the Bombers hop a flight for Minnesota for a three game set with the Twins. Talk about a killer schedule.
The commissioner is talking about avoiding these kinds of issues with the schedule next year but that will mean standing up to his broadcast partners and saying “no” when they want a late game prior to a long flight.
All of a sudden, the Mets are hitting and pitching like there is no tomorrow. That’s basically what they’re faced with. If players want to avoid the disruption of being traded, they must perform at an extremely high level to convince their GM that they are still in the race. Trades are already starting to happen but unless they are given an offer than can’t refuse, the Metsies must stay patient. Fans are torn between wanting meaningful baseball the rest of the season and packing it in for youth right away. A skid now would hasten the latter option, but a continued streak of wins might postpone it indefinitely, or at least force it into the waiver period.  7/16/17
