After John Mara’s meeting with the press yesterday, I am more convinced than ever that the Giants did the right thing. I’m also aware I’m in a minority here and am girding myself for a battle on air Saturday.
Things to keep in mind: It’s likely that Reese and Mc will be out after the season. Paul Dotino swears that the current organization believes that Webb is the QB of the future. But what will the new people think and what will they base it on? Wouldn’t meaningful snaps in a real game matter, and influence whether to take a QB in the draft?
Second, I get that Geno is hated by fans. But Webb has had no reps with the starters and to throw him into Oakland unprepared isn’t fair to anyone. He’ll get his chance soon when he’s had a little more time to get ready.
As far as the outcry to trade Eli, it’ s just stupidity at this point. Manning still gives them the best chance to win in 2018. His dad says he loves being the Giants QB. Once his hurt feelings heal, if new management thinks they can win next year, they’ll likely keep him as starter. If they want to wipe the slate clean, they’ll trade him for picks. Eli would be foolish to demand a trade over this, not knowing what the Giants future holds.
The crazy thing is that Eli got a lot of heat from fans and media this season for not elevating the team. I always maintained that most of this wasn’t his fault. But now that the team has the temerity to want to to see what they have for the future, everyone is up in arms about it, even though they gave him an option to start.
One more thing — Mara said that McAdoo might have handled the news better, that subtle communication isn’t one of his strong points. Pretty damning I’d say, when coaches are now expected to be great communicators with players.
