Sunday answered some questions about the local football teams. Unfortunately, they weren’t the answers we wanted to hear.
The Jets showed themselves to be pretenders. As fans, we get caught up in emotion and fantasy. They barely beat a struggling Chiefs team at home last weekend after KC practically handed them the game with their lack of discipline. Denver had lost eight straight. Jets were favored. Whoopee!
From the start, the Broncos dominated. They marched up and down the field; the Jets offense went backwards. They tried to run wide against a speedy defense. Whose great idea was that? There was a point late in the game when a Bronco receiver had more total yardage than the Jets entire team. Then McCown gets hurt.
The sad silver lining is that the Jets will finally get to see the young quarterbacks. They don’t expect much from either of them, but at least there will be evidence to support their pessimism. Or a slim chance that they’re wrong and one will emerge as a real alternative.
The Giants scored ten points at home against Dallas with Manning at the helm. They got 17 in Oakland with Geno Smith. Love Manning all you want but with the Giants O-line and lack of quality receivers, Smith may be the better choice if winning is the goal. In any case, it’s crazy not to play Davis Webb some. How do you do that without ruffling Manning’s feathers? Remember, he benched himself in the Raider game…he could have started and avoided all the angst. What if John Mara personally tells him that they need to see Webb? Will Eli graciously step aside and take one for the team? Or will they appease Manning and the fans at the expense of the future? Stay tuned.
