Richard Neer began his radio career at WLIR, fostering it through its birth as the first suburban progressive station in the nation. He has worked in important roles at the most prestigious and groundbreaking New York radio stations in history–beginning with the free form rocker WNEW-FM, his radio home for almost thirty years. His roles included program director and morning personality, working alongside such legends as Scott Muni and Alison Steele.
It was there that he became friends with a fellow Jersey kid named Bruce Springsteen, who called him frequently when he was working the late shift.
He started his sports talk career at the legacy Great American Songbook station, WNEW-AM, on a roster that included Steve Allen, Julius LaRosa and Jonathan Schwartz. He joined the nation’s first full time sports talker, WFAN, in 1988 and has hosted programs there ever since.
His work of non-fiction, FM, the Rise and Fall of Rock Radio, (Villard 2001), is the true story of how corporate interests destroyed a medium that millions grew up with.
Although a work of fiction, The Last Resort details the real life travails of over the air broadcasting, as it struggles to survive the challenges new technology presents.
He spends a lot of his time these days on Hilton Head Island with his wife Vicky and his Golden Retriever Duncan, whose doppelganger Bosco features prominently in all the books.
