Okay, I often steal from Steven VanZandt who stole from Al Pacino who probably stole from some ancient Greek, but the Mets have done it again.
Mathematically, their chances of winning the division are under two percent, and under ten to make the wildcard according to FanGraphs. But yesterday’s sweep of the Braves was a reminder of what might have been, and for those half-full people, what still might be. Great starting pitching, big home runs, timely hits. That’s what the 2017 Mets were supposed to be. The gauntlet will be over the next two weeks, when they host the Cubs and Nats at home and play the Dodgers and Giants on the road. I believe they need to get to .500 by the end of June. A repeat of their second half surges of the last two seasons would be possible then.
But if they continue to take one step up and two back, the trade deadline will be about the future, not the present. I’m all for bringing up Rosario now. Let’s see if his defense at short and hot bat can translate to the bigs and give this team a much needed lift. Cabrera has gotten old overnight, maybe due to how banged up he is.
The Yankees have gone for it with the kids and it’s paid off big time. Flores, Rosario, Conforto and Smith are the future for the Mets. They need to embrace it, sooner than later.
