Roger Smith has died at the age of 84. Although in later years, he was mostly known as the business manager and husband of Ann Margret, he was a star in his own right in the hugely popular TV series, 77 Sunset Strip, which now reruns on ME-TV at 4 a.m. weekdays and is piling up on my DVR. Strange coincidence — two great looking leading men with a sense of humor about themselves pass within a few days of each other, and both were named Roger.

Smith was impossibly handsome, suave and witty as detective Jeff Spencer. He often played guitar and sang passably, while working undercover as anything from a college student to a hit man.

The USA Today story below details his health struggles and subsequent avocations. Seemed like a great guy with strong values. He’ll live forever as a cool private eye on the show that revitalized the genre.
