The Mets had just won the 1969 World Series. All of New York was enraptured by this rags to riches story and every player who contributed was accorded legend status.

So imagine my thrill when, in our maiden season of WLIR as the first suburban FM progressive station, Ed Charles stopped by. Back then, we were having a difficult time procuring vinyl to play on the air. Record companies had no idea that a little station in Garden City, L.I. could be the force it quickly turned into. But somehow Buddah Records noticed us and sent their rep, newly hired Ed Charles, to promote one of their artists.

He was kind and gracious, posing for photos with every staff member. We were thrilled to be in his presence and hear his stories of the Mets’ great season.

Ed didn’t last too long at Buddah and I guess his visit was like a minor league tryout, but I’ll never forget how sweet he was to a then fledgling entity.
