50 years ago, July 1, 1970, WLIR debuted as a progressive rock station. Michael Harrison and I were college kids who had convinced the owner to make this radical change. It was hailed as the first “underground” station in the ‘burbs, and led to a long legacy of great rock radio in “smaller” markets. It started as a low minor league operation and evolved into a powerhouse within a few months. It’s also how two kids started their long careers in radio and publishing that continue today, fifty years on. The fascinating oral history can be heard here. It’s the latest installment, dated June 30.
