The Yanks just swept a four game series from the Mets. What did you expect? Maybe the Metsies steal one game, deGrom’s outing or perhaps a Yankee starter blows up? With the Bombers in contention and the Mets hopelessly out of it, no surprises here.
But this week has proven, man for man, in EVERY position, the Yankees are better. Left field? Compare Gardner’s numbers to Cespedes’. Rosario is an exciting young talent, yes, but have you noticed the year Gregorius is having? Conforto’s a star, but versus Judge?
I won’t waste time comparing bullpens. How about the starters? Injuries on both sides, but who do the Mets have that you can believe in? Syndergaard and deGrom. That’s it. Matz looks awful. Wheeler can’t get past four innings when healthy, which is rare. Lugo and Gsellman — mediocre at best. Harvey may be a lost cause. Take Gray, Seve, and even Tanaka over the Mets guys.
Going forward? The Mets farm system is below average while the Yankees is loaded with talent. Cashman reloaded with trades last year. Alderson gets single A prayers for his supposed studs and can’t even trade Grandy and Cabrera for salary relief.
The final slap in Mets fans’ face is that the Yankees aren’t even the best team in their league. Houston, Cleveland and Boston are probably better, although there’s plenty of time left to determine that. The Mets are closer to the worst than the best in the NL. Their record against playoff bound teams is 10-28. And going into 2018, who will play CF, 3rd, 2nd, and Catcher?
Injuries aside, this team is a wreck. Most figure Collins won’t be back, although you can’t lay the blame at his feet. Look to their GM for that, a tough Marine who talks a good game but has failed miserably. You can build around Conforto, Thor and deGrom, with hopes for Smith and Rosario. That’s all you have. Cespedes can get hot and carry them for brief periods when he feels like it. Meanwhile Bird, Torres and Adams are on the way to the Bronx next year and you know Cashman will add more pieces.
2017 was supposed to be the year the Mets took over the city. That dream is over for the foreseeable future.
